Bright red trousers stop being a statement the moment you put something severe above them. A high-neck grey knit with a row of buttons is about as severe as a top gets, and it turns the red into a colour rather than an announcement.

Most florals read as spring. This one doesn’t — the ground is almost black, the flowers are ochre and rust, and it sits much closer to autumn than to a garden party. Which is exactly why a plain cream knit is the right partner: it lets the skirt be the whole story.
